What will happen when Doug Davis returns??

Trying to figure out what the Diamondbacks plan to do when Doug Davis returns after his last minor league start today. Something has to give on the D-backs pitching staff. They are currently carrying 12 guys on the staff, so could possibly make it 13, but that's a bit unconventional these days. Edgar Gonzalez would seem to be an obvious choice to move down, but he's out of options, so that makes it more difficult. Brandon Medders is also out of options. Here are some possibilities in the order that I would do it:

  • Move Max Scherzer back down to AAA Tucson to keep him going on a regular basis in a starting rotation
  • Move either Gonzalez or Medders down to Tucson and maybe they would clear waivers
  • Trade Gonzalez, Medders, or possibly Juan Cruz to try to pick up another lefty...having only Doug Slaten down there is a little slim.
  • Send Robby Hammock down and just have two catchers and 13 pitchers
Option number one seems to make the most logical sense. But, I've got a feeling that keeping their prized package up in the big leagues might be a priority. We'll just have to wait until late next week when it's expected that Davis will join the team in Atlanta....should be interesting.
